There is absolutely loads going on at the Royal Ontario Museum this March Break. If you don’t have a camp planned, this is a perfect way to escape the cold and the snow.
And you could win a Family Membership to the ROM RIGHT NOW! Head over to our Facebook page to find out how.
Act out Shakespearean ambitions
Toronto’s Classical Theatre Project comes to the ROM this March Break. Follow costumed actors on an adventure through the whole museum, checking out artifacts from Shakespearean times. Learn to dance like an Elizabethan prince or princess from March 14th-20th, and watch a new version of Hamlet acted out by puppets by performers from the Toronto Fringe. Snap a selfie in the Elizabethan Photo Booth.
Mysterious journeys
In 1845, two ships left England and they never returned. Learn about the mysteries around the Franklin Expedition, and ring a replica of one of the ship’s bells. Peek inside Mabel Moon’s cabinet of curiosities with her interactive musical show for kids up to 10. Explore the smells and sights of the Spice Route, and hear about a time when spices like cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg were worth more than their weight in gold (March 14th-15th).
How to do the ROM March Break with kids
It’s worth buying your tickets online ahead of time: you save the service fees and don’t have to wait in line once you get there. Strollers can go pretty much everywhere in the ROM, except in the CIBC Discovery Gallery but there’s marked stroller parking just outside. When it’s very busy, extra big and double strollers may not be allowed in. Backpack-style child carriers are a no-go too, it’s much too easy to knock over a priceless display – just ask the guy I watched take out an entire shelf of Starbucks mugs with one of those. Wagons and other pulling child vehicles are too big for the ROM too. However, if your little person loses the will to walk, you can rent a stroller for only $2 – there are limited numbers though.
There’s lots of places to stop and relax, have a snack and a quiet moment if your little people get a bit too wound up. The Druxy’s ROM Cafe is there for caffeine needs and snacks too. There are blue-shirted ROM staff all over if you need quick directions to the nearest washroom with a change table or details on when the next puppet show is on. Check out this helpful page for more tips from ROM staff.
Take a break from the cold, shuck your coats at the coat check, and spend the day exploring the warm galleries.
